I’m going to start this post by saying that this book is not for young children, nor is it for people with a weak stomach.
This book was read to me when I was a child, I don’t remember how old I was at the time but I was young enough that this scarred me. Some of the scenes in this book are very graphic and violent, and with it being a true story, it is very gruesome.
Dave Pelzer is now very well-known, he is known for what he has survived and for his words of wisdom. I believe he does speeches and conferences, which he well deserves after what he has overcome. I can only hope that his words can help at least one person, but I would like them to change the world.
Doing a review of this book is difficult because I don’t want to give it away. What I can say is that reading this book will change your life. It will change how you feel about your daily routines, it will change how you look at the world. Every look you give to a child walking down the street will be altered. You will look for signs of abuse on everyone for at least a few weeks after reading this book but it will be those looks and that extra awareness that may save someone life.
It is this book that made me want to teach, made me want to give every child a safe place and it made me question the systems we have in place time and time again. I believe it was this book that taught me to give the shirt off of my back and to appreciate the life that I live. It is this book that has made me buy gifts for foster children every year that I’ve lived on my own.
I recommend this book with a box of tissue and a hot beverage. Make sure you give yourself extra time that day though, you will want to hug and kiss every single person that you appreciate having in your life.
